About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the pain, numbness and weakness that results from compression of the median nerve by the transverse carpal ligament at the carpal tunnel of the wrist. Compression of the nerve at the forearm, elbow, shoulder and neck can contribute to symptoms of the median nerve at the  wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects 1-5% of the general population.

When should I seek treatment?

Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome is most effective when started early in the process. The longer there is pressure on the median nerve through the carpal tunnel, the more likely it is for carpal tunnel symptoms to become permanant. If left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to considerable amounts of pain and permanant diability.

What are some causes of carpal tunnel syndrome?

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include systemic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, repetitive trauma, thickening of the tendons at the wrist as they slide through the carpal tunnel, edema from carpal tunnel tissue injury, edema from pregnancy, fractures near the carpal tunnel and genetic predisposition due to a small carpal tunnel.
